Hekla is the most active Icelandic volcano and for many centuries it was believed to be the gateway to hell. Today Hekla is one of Iceland’s most popular climbs, due to it’s relative location to Reykjavik (3 hours) and its relative ease. The climb is mostly on lava screes from the last eruption in 2000, with a small part of the climb on snow. The climb itself is about 6 hours both ways with a spectacular view from the summit at 4,892 feet.
