Pequeno Alpaymayo and Huayna Potosi
This is your chance to summit two of the best climbing peaks in Bolivia, Pequeno Alpaymayo and Huayna Potosi in one trip. These momtains are known world wide for their beauty and challenging, yet relatively non-technical climbs to the summit.
Day 1- Arrival La Paz, Bolivia – Transfer Hotel
The airport is located in the city of “El Alto”, which is the home to the highest international airport in the world. From here you will be transferred to your hotel descending approximately 30 mintes into La Paz. Do not worry about the altitude, our program has been designed to get you gradually acclimatized. We do however suggest you take it easy, drink plenty of water and eat lightly. You will have the rest of the day free and that evening we will have a briefing and a welcome dinner.
Day 2- La Paz – Rinconada – Base Camp ( Chiar Khotia Lake)
We leave La Paz in a private vehicle around 8:00 a.m. for the village of Tuni. From here, our muleteer will be waiting with the donkeys to help us transport our gear to the campsite. We begin by hiking parallel with Lake Tuni and soon we will begin the walk up a beautiful valley, which brings us to the Chiar Khota Lake . Our campsite it is located at the shores of a lovely lake called “Chiar Kota” (Dark Lake). As we approach the base camp, we will be surrounded by beautiful peaks, with one of them projecting from the rest. This peak is Condoriri and it resembles a condor with its wide-open wings.
Day 3- Acclimatization Day ( hike up to Cerro Austria 5,300 meters)
Known as Austria or Cerro Negro, this is a easy trekking peak that can be reached via moraines and rock slopes with no technical difficulty. Sometimes there is some snow on the slopes and depending on its depth we could need mountaineering boots and gaiters, but normally no climbing equipment is required. This will be great exercise to help us complete our acclimatization process and a unique opportunity to enjoy one of the best views of the Cordillera Real.
Day 4- Base Camp – Summit Pequeño Alpamayo at 5,370 meters – Base Camp
We will have breakfast, aproximately 3:00 a.m. after which we will begin the trek toward glacier. sAfter about 1 hour, we will reach the glacier and use crampons from here to the summit. First we have to climb Mt. Tarija (5,250m) a smaller peak, contiue around, then begin the push toward Pequeño Alpamayo summit. Fromthe summit we will see views of Huayna Potosi (6,088 meters) and Cabeza de Condor, Condoriri, then return back to basecamp.
Day 5- Base Camp – Rinconada – Huayna Potosi Base Camp
Return to Rinconada, where we proceed directly to the Huayna Potosi Base Camp at 4,750 meters. W e will camp here at basecamp.
Day 06- Base Camp – High Camp Huayna Potosi
After a light breakfast we will get ready to start climbing glaciers, crossing crevices and steep frozen slopes to arrive at the foot of the final pyramid. There we follow either the north crest or the east wall to the summit. After we take our photos from the summit, we head back to high camp, where we pack up camp and the porters begin to transport the equipment and gear down. We then descend down and head back to La Paz
Day 7- High Camp – Huayna Potosi Summit 6,080 meters – Base Camp – La Paz – Hotel
After a light breakfast we will get ready to start climbing glaciers, crossing crevices and steep frozen slopes to arrive at the foot of the final pyramid. There we follow either the north crest or the east wall to the summit. After we take our photos from the summit, we head back to high camp, where we pack up camp and the porters begin to transport the equipment and gear down. We then descend down and head back to La Paz.
Day 8-LaPaz, transfer to airport, home
